Glen Coker - S.A's only One Man Band Drummer

Glen Coker started singing and drumming in 1974. He taught himself the art of drumming at the age of 9. Coming from a musical family, Glen was taught how to run a band successfully by his father, Archie Coker, who played and managed their family corporate function band "Bangle" (Which later became a top "Country" band.)

From 1981, Glen spent 4 years of his musical career in the Light Horse Regimental Band where he studied tuned and untuned percussion (xylophone,

tympani drums, vibraphone, tubular bells, marching band drumming playing 5 different instruments, concert band skills and many more.) It was here where Glen was given the opportunity to study further and became very competent at sight-reading.

Glen gained valuable experience early in 1986 by drumming for the "Rock ’n Roll Revival Band" with SABC3’s Percy van Rooyen. This led to many live performances countrywide and numerous recording sessions. In 1990, Glen decided to try his own venture, his own band with his own personal touch. The band "Countdown" was born, featuring Glen, Cedric Wessels and Marinda Gouws.

This band grew to be one of the top bands in the country. The success of this band was mainly due to the professional management and choice of repertoire. In 1994, Glen then joined the very popular dance band "Crystal December". In 1995, Glen re-formed "Countdown", this time as a 2 piece with Marinda, having even more success than before. Marinda left a year later to follow a solo career and this is when Glen teamed up with Graham McKay to form "Far From George". After 18 months the band grew taking on the talents of Audrey Spiller, (a dynamite frontline singer) who later left to join an original band. Once again, the band grew adding 2 more members and changed the name to "Gasoline". In October 1998, Glen decided to form a new band. "Full Circle" was comprised of Glen and a very talented female singer, Deborah Dyer. This band followed on where "Countdown" left off. January 2000 was a new adventure for Glen when he decided to do something completely unique. This is when S.A.’s only One Man Band Drummer started performing (giving it stick!!!). It is still early days in Glen’s solo career and he is received with overwhelming praise in every venue he performs.
